Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Business? AI Search for Local Businesses

More people ask AI assistants for local recommendations. Here's how those assistants find businesses, why some get named and others don't, and what you can do about it.

A growing number of people skip the map entirely and ask an AI assistant: "Who's a good family dentist in Mississauga?" or "Best immigration consultant near Brampton?" The assistant usually answers with three to five names. If you're not one of them, that customer may never know you exist.

How AI assistants find local businesses

Tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI answers, Gemini and Perplexity often search the web when you ask for a local recommendation. They then summarize what they find. The details vary by tool, but they generally draw on:

  • Business listings and maps data, including Google Business Profiles and directories
  • Reviews: how many, how positive, and what people say about specific services
  • Your website: whether it clearly says what you do, where, and for whom
  • Mentions elsewhere: local news, "best of" lists, associations, community sites

In other words, AI assistants mostly reward the same things Google Maps does, plus clear, readable information about your business.

Why some businesses get recommended and others don't

An AI assistant can only recommend you if it can find you and understand you. Common reasons a good business gets left out:

  • The website doesn't clearly list services or the areas served (or the key information is only in images)
  • Few reviews, or reviews that never mention what you actually do
  • Different names, addresses or phone numbers across different sites
  • No mentions anywhere outside your own website and profile

What you can do

  1. Say it plainly on your website. A services page that lists each service in normal words, plus the neighbourhoods and cities you serve. Text, not pictures of text.
  2. Keep your Google Business Profile complete: categories, services, hours, description.
  3. Encourage detailed reviews. You can't tell customers what to write, but asking "would you mention what we helped you with?" is fair and helpful.
  4. Fix your listings so your name, address and phone match everywhere.
  5. Earn local mentions: sponsor a local team, join your business association or BIA, get listed in your industry's directory.

Be realistic

Nobody controls what AI assistants say, and their answers change over time and from one tool to another. Be wary of anyone who promises to "get you into ChatGPT". What you can do is make your business easy to find and easy to understand. That helps with AI answers, Google Maps and real customers at the same time.

Check where you stand

MapLocal's free scan asks an AI assistant, with live web search, who it recommends for your service in your city, and shows whether your business is on the list next to your Google Maps results.
